Samsung: Tizen is the second-largest OS in the budget segment in India

Yesterday, Samsung unveiled its new Tizen powered device, the Z3, in India. As the company detailed the specifications of the handset and its expectations regarding the device, it also made an interesting claim regarding the Tizen operating system being a major player in the budget segment in India.

Asim Warsi, VP of Samsung India – IT and mobile, stated:

Tizen is the second-largest OS in the budget segment in India.

According to the South Korean company, its Tizen OS is ahead of Windows Phone in India, and is second only to Android. The comment also implies that the Tizen-powered Z1 launched six months ago was more successful in the entry-level market as compared to Microsoft"s Lumia devices in the same price range.

Even though the initial response to Samsung"s first Tizen device in India was rather frosty, the company did manage to sell one million handsets in just six months. Earlier, HC Hong, President and Chief Executive of Samsung India Electronics, also said:

We were encouraged by the huge popularity of Samsung Z1, the first Tizen OS powered smartphone that sold over one million units within six months of its launch earlier this year.

Samsung hopes to improve on this by selling the same number of Z3 units in just three months. The company reportedly plans to accomplish this by selling the Samsung Z3 across Europe, making this one of the first Tizen devices to land on the continent trailing behind other newcomers like Ubuntu Touch, Firefox OS and Sailfish OS.
