Samsung announced the PlayGalaxy Link service along the unveil of its Note10 flagship back in August 2019. The service was a means to play PC games on Samsung devices by streaming them to the phone. The offering was like what the Steam Link app offers but was limited to Samsung devices. The service added support for other Galaxy flagships in November. Now, the South Korean giant is sunsetting the feature, with the end date for the service set for March 27, 2020.
The announcement quietly began showing up on the PlayGalaxy website (spotted by Gamasutra). The company adds that the end of this service will allow its development organization to “more effectively focus its resources and add value to the next release of (a) new product”. The Image download functions in "auto game search" will be gone on March 1, 2020.
It is not clear if the firm intends to return to the game streaming space. It seems unlikely with offerings such as Microsoft’s Project xCloud ramping up efforts to increase the reach of the service. Perhaps, with the two companies expanding partnerships, especially in the gaming space, it makes sense for the phone manufacturer to retire its own service to devote resources to other areas of improvement.
