Samsung has unveiled three new additions to its range of Android devices, all of them part of the affordable Galaxy J series.
First up is the Galaxy J Max, a huge phablet with a 7-inch screen, which we first heard about last week.
The mid-range device includes 4G LTE connectivity, and will reportedly go on sale this month in India priced at Rs.13,400 INR (around $200 USD), featuring these key specs:
- 7-inch TFT LCD with WXGA (1280x800px) resolution
- Quad-core 1.5GHz processor
- 1.5GB RAM
- 8GB onboard storage (plus microSD card support)
- 8MP rear camera with LED flash and 720p video recording at 30fps
- 2MP front-facing camera
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth 4.0
- microUSB 2.0
- Removable 4000mAh battery
Next up is the Galaxy J1 Ace Neo, a low-end 4G LTE handset which appeared on the company"s South Africa website. Bizarrely, as SamMobile reports, Samsung is apparently launching this new handset with Android 5.1 Lollipop, rather than Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which has now been available for nine months.
Pricing info isn"t yet available, but the Galaxy J1 Ace Neo will be sold in white, black and blue options, and its key specs include:
- 4.3-inch Super AMOLED with WVGA (800x480px) resolution
- Quad-core 1.5GHz processor
- 1GB RAM
- 8GB onboard storage (plus microSD card support)
- 5MP rear camera with LED flash and 720p video recording at 30fps
- 2MP front facing camera
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth 4.0
- microUSB 2.0
- Removable 1900mAh battery
And finally, there"s the Galaxy J2 (2016) - another 4G LTE handset and, arguably, the most interesting of these new devices, thanks to the introduction of a rather unexpected feature. First, let"s take a look at the J2"s main specs:
- 5-inch Super AMOLED with HD (1280x720px) resolution
- Quad-core 1.5GHz processor
- 1.5GB RAM
- 8GB onboard storage (plus microSD card support)
- 8MP rear camera with LED flash and 720p video recording at 30fps
- 5MP front-facing camera
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth 4.0
- microUSB 2.0
- Removable 2600mAh battery
But the J2 also has another unusual feature, which Samsung calls "Smart Glow".
The device has a "halo" of colour encircling (or "ensquircling", perhaps) the rear camera. Samsung calls it a "next-gen LED notification system [that] allows you to colour-code your contacts, apps and phone usage alerts".
Samsung also promotes a "Selfie Assist" feature with Smart Glow which...
...enables you to take properly framed selfies with the 8MP rear camera. It gives you directional cues – whether you must tilt the phone to the left or right – to detect your face and lock focus. The LED Notification Ring will light up completely and take the selfie automatically.
Like the J Max, the Galaxy J2 (2016) is launching in India, priced at Rs.9,750 (around $145).
