Samsung unveils the high-performance PM1653 SSD for enterprise

Samsung has announced the PM1653, a 24G SAS (SAS-4) SSD, which it claims is the industry’s highest performing product in its market segment. The SSD is designed for handling AI and big data workloads in enterprise servers, the Korean firm said.

The new 24G SAS-4 interface is capable of supported double the speed of the previous 12G SAS-3 generation and the PM1653 is the first 24G SAS SSD to use sixth-generation V-NAND chips which allow for storage capacities from 800GB to 30.72TB for complex enterprise server systems. The SSD has an incredible read speed of 4,300MB/s.

Commenting on the firm’s involvement with SAS storage, Kwangil Park, senior vice president of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics said:

“As the leading provider of SAS storage for a decade, Samsung has been offering the most advanced and reliable enterprise solutions in full support of the critical workloads of global server OEMs, governments and financial institutions. Samsung enterprise solutions are also accredited by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology for the most powerful data security. Like we have done with the PM1653, Samsung will continue to collaborate with our customers to accommodate the ever-growing demand of the enterprise server market for the most uncompromising offerings available.”

In its announcement, Samsung said that it has been working with Broadcom, a leader in host bus adapters (HBAs) to ensure that the new PM1653 SSD and other 24G SAS products work seamlessly. In terms of product availability, the PM1653 is now being sampled with select Samsung customers before mass production of the hardware begins in the second half of the year.
