Samsung's SmartThings will support more devices through partnership with IoT firm ABB

Samsung has announced that it’s working with the Internet of Things (IoT) firm ABB to support more residential and commercial devices through SmartThings, Samsung’s smart devices hub. By working with different companies, Samsung’s SmartThings is becoming a one-stop shop for monitoring connected devices.

Commenting on the news, Chanwoo Park, Head of IoT Business at Samsung Electronics, said:

“With SmartThings, Samsung has been able to create an eco-system of smart appliances making homes smarter and more efficient. We are excited to build on that by partnering with ABB to expand the SmartThings experience to new customers making it easier for consumers to reduce costs and create positive environmental impact.”

Under the partnership, ABB-free@home will be integrated with SmartThings. The two companies will create a cloud-to-cloud integration allowing customers of ABB-free@home and SmartThings to get more access and control of devices.

Samsung highlighted that 40% of the global carbon emissions are generated by buildings and it believes by creating smart homes and commercial buildings that people will be able to intelligently reduce their overall energy usage. Some of the ways people can reduce usage with connected devices include remotely switching on and off lights and heaters.
