According to Samsung, the new 10nm 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM chip is 16% faster than the company’s last year’s 1y-based 12GB LPDDR5 DRAM chips, with data transfer rates reaching 6,400Mb/s. To put that in perspective, a 16GB package will be able to transfer about ten 5GB full-sized HD movies, or 51.2GB worth of data, in just one second.
The new 1z-based LPDDR5 chips are also 30 percent thinner than last year’s 1y-based LPDDR5, enabling 5G and multi-camera features in smartphones and foldable tablets with slimmer designs.
The company did not mention when new smartphones utilizing the new LPDDR5 chips will start shipping. However, they did mention that the company will “further strengthen its presence in the flagship mobile device market" throughout 2021, which indicates a short wait.
