Last July, Samsung announced that its Galaxy S II smartphone had sold 5 million units worldwide in just under three months. The sales success has apparently continued even as the Android-powered smartphone is just beginning to be sold here in the US. Now it seems that sales of the phone have actually accelerated since that previous announcement. On Sunday, Engadget reports that a press release from Samsung stated that the Galaxy S II has now sold 10 million units worldwide since its launch last April.
The US versions of the smartphone are just beginning to be sold here in the US after being announced at a press event by Samsung in August. Sprint launched its version of the device, under the name the Samsung Galaxy II Epic 4G Touch, on September 16 for $199 with a two-year contract. The Sprint version has a 4.5 inch screen. However, AT&T"s version of the smartphone, due out on October 2, will have a slightly smaller 4.3 inch screen. It will also be sold for $199 with a two year contract. T-Mobile is supposed to offer its own version of the Galaxy S II but pricing and a release date have yet to be announced.
While the US versions of the Galaxy S II all support the 3G wireless networks of the carriers, Samsung has already announced plans to offer a version of the smartphone that will connect to the faster LTE-based wireless networks. Today the company also announced the Samsung Galaxy S II HD that will have a larger 4.65 inch Super AMOLED HD screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720. Those two phones will first be released in Korea but the company has yet to announce a US release.
