Afterwaiting for nearly a month, Samsung"s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are finally arriving on US store shelves starting this week. Before its retail debut, we were able to see its internals, and now it appears that we will be able to see just how much punishment the Galaxy S8 can take.
The YouTube channel JerryRigEverything has taken the time to test out the durability of Samsung"s latest, by subjecting it to a variety of different types of abuse. During the tests, it was discovered that the display on the front is protected with Corning"s Gorilla Glass and does not easily scratch, meaning your keys and pocket change will not affect its surface. The glass on the rear is also just as resistant to scratching, along with the camera lens and flash. While you can scratch the fingerprint reader with a blade, it will not impair the reader"s functionality, still allowing for fingerprint registration.
What was perhaps the most surprising was the AMOLED display and its resistance to flames. Typically, in older AMOLED displays like the S7 edge, the screen would turn a milky white after being exposed to a flame for a few seconds. On the Galaxy S8, the display was able to accept multiple 30-second exposures to a flame before it became discolored, but eventually returned to its normal color. It was only on the third attempt that the display was finally permanently damaged.
As far as the bend test, the handset proved to be extremely sturdy offering very little flex. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ will arrive on US carriers starting April 21. Those in Europe can expect it on April 28.
