The Samsung "Keyboard Cover" was unveiled alongside the Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ at its "Unpacked" event in New York. While it might be a strange accessory, it does invoke a bit of nostalgia and could prove to be a popular tool amongst power users.
At one point, physical keyboards dominated smartphones mainly due to its high input accuracy and satisfying tactile feedback. But, as technology for touchscreens improved and software refined, physical keyboards slowly faded into the background. With the debut of the "Keyboard Cover", Samsung might be trying to revive the physical keyboard for smartphones. While Blackberry has generally been at the helm of the "keyboard ship", Samsung might be poised to capture the niche market in the Android community.
While it is unknown how popular this accessory will be, it does have the potential to capture those that yearn for a physical keyboard experience found on older Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices. Pricing and availability has not been announced.
