Samsung's next foldable phone might be available before the Galaxy S11

Samsung faced a bumpy road with the release of the Galaxy Fold earlier this year, but the company isn"t done with foldables. During its developer conference, the company teased a clamshell form factor for a foldable phone, and it was rumored a few weeks ago that the phone will be launching alongside the Galaxy S11 family.

Now, a report suggests that the foldable smartphone is coming even before Samsung"s more mainstream family of flagships. According to a report from YonHap News Agency, Samsung"s next foldable will be announced at Samsung"s Unpacked event in February, where the company typically announces the next generation of the Galaxy S series. However, the folding phone will reportedly go on sale immediately after its announcement, whereas the Galaxy S phones usually come out a couple of weeks after the event.

The report also mentions that this foldable device will be priced somewhere in the "mid $1,000 range". This seems to fall closely in line with the pricing for Motorola"s razr, which was recently delayed due to high demand. That phone costs $1,500 and it sports a Snapdragon 710 chipset, so it"s likely that Samsung"s upcoming flagship isn"t trying to be a successor to the Galaxy Fold, but rather a more accessible entry point for foldables, competing directly with the razr.

The new foldable from Samsung is expected to come with a 6.7-inch main display and a punch-hole cutout for the front-facing camera. It will only have two cameras on the outside, and a small banner-like screen to show the time and notification icons when the phone is folded.

On a separate note, it"s recently been suggested by leaker Ice Universe that Samsung"s new Galaxy S smartphone might not be called Galaxy S11 after all. Similar to how Huawei"s naming scheme changed, Samsung might opt to brand its new phones the Galaxy S20 family. However, in subsequent tweets, the leaker continues to refer to the devices as Galaxy S11.
