If you thought that flip phones are just for emerging markets where not everyone can afford real smartphones, you"ll need to think again. At an event in Xiamen, China, Samsung announced the W2018, an Android-powered flip phone with specs that rival traditional flagship smartphones.
For one thing, the 12-megapixel camera has the largest aperture that you"ll find on a phone, beating out the V30"s f/1.6 aperture. This should allow in more light, but in brighter conditions, it can actually switch to f/2.4, lending credibility to reports of an adjustable f/1.5 lens in the upcoming Galaxy S9.
Coming in Elegant Gold and Platinum, the W2018 comes in at 132.2x63.2x15.9mm, and weighs in at 247g. The 4.2-inch Super AMOLED display has Full HD resolution, and you can use the D-pad and numeric keys for navigation.
It comes with a Snapdragon 835 chipset and 6GB RAM, which rivals flagship Android handsets like the Galaxy Note8. There are two storage configurations: the Extreme Edition comes with 64GB and the Collector Edition comes with 256GB.
It also comes with other features that you"d expect in a Samsung handset, like a dedicated Bixby button and a USB Type-C port for charging. As for software, it ships with Android 7.1.1 Nougat.
There"s no information available on pricing just yet, but the handset will be available through China Telecom.
