The first major content update for Sea of Thieves is still set to launch early next month, but meanwhile, Rare is continuing its weekly updates for its pirate adventure game. Today"s update is numbered 1.0.4 and brings along several new features as well as an array of bug fixes.
Pirates who have reached legendary status can finally show off their dedication to the game thanks to the new Pirate Legend sails, hull, and figurehead items that have been added to the game. These customization items can be purchased through the Shipwright"s Shop that is situated in the Legendary Hideout.
The captain"s cabin in the galleon now lets players place their valuable treasure pieces on shelves much easier than before. Also, dropping items off ships onto the sea has also been made easier, meaning the number of pirates accidentally falling overboard while trying to drop gunpowder barrels off the back of the ship should be lowered.
There"s a couple of new sound effects that have been added as well, which should play out when opening a lore book and when a merchant alliance contract expires. Lastly, the push-to-talk function can now be rebound to other buttons on controllers.
As for performance improvements, islands should now look much better when viewed at a distance using a spyglass on all platforms. PC players running at lower resolutions than what their monitor is capable of should see some performance improvements as well. Rubber banding reductions and some server crash fixes have also been implemented in this update.
Here are the resolved issues in the Sea of Thieves 1.0.4 update:

- Players may experience details of their pirate (such as hair colour / scars) looking different from their initial selection.

- Skeleton Fort or Bounty quest skeleton waves sometimes spawn in the ground or cannot be found at all.
Further improvements to spawning have been made in this update, and we are working to resolve the issue for all islands. For a potential work around, please read this Support article.
- [PC] Push to talk option will reset to default (disabled) between sessions.
This bug has been fixed and will be added to a future update.
The game is currently in the middle of its weekly maintenance session which is set to run until 6am PT. But, since the update is already available to download on Xbox One and Windows 10, weighing in at around 1.25GB, players will be able to jump in with the new build right as the servers come online.
Sea of Thieves is available for purchase via the Microsoft Store for $59.99 as an Xbox Play Anywhere title for Windows 10 as well as Xbox One, and is also part of the $9.99/mo Xbox Game Pass subscription program.
