Sea of Thieves saw 4.8 million active players thanks to Pirates of the Caribbean crossover

Microsoft"s E3 show had a surprise unveiling of a Pirates of the Caribbean crossover with Sea of Thieves, Rare"s popular pirate adventure game. This "A Pirate"s Life" free update promptly launched a week after the reveal, bringing Captain Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones, and other popular characters, as well as iconic locations and vessels, from the movie series over to the game for a new Tall Tale story campaign.

Today, Rare revealed the update caused June to be the 2018-released game"s busiest month ever, seeing 4.8 million active players sailing the seas. The number should include PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and cloud players, from both owners of the game and Xbox Game Pass subscribers. The studio didn"t give a breakdown of platforms.

Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate thanked the playerbase for its support and for the positive reaction to the collaboration with Disney, adding:

"To all of you who’ve recently cast off for the very first time, jumped back in after a break or simply never stepped away from your regular Voyages, thank you from all of us and we hope that Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life (and the surprise of its unveiling!) was everything you could have wanted from a crossover on this scale."

Sea of Thieves also saw a relatively minor update hit the game today, which was aimed at offering more Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired cosmetic items, new weekly events, some gameplay tweaks, and a horde of bug fixes. Find the complete patch notes here.

Meanwhile, for pirates looking to gain more experience and gold than usual, the studio will be hosting another Gold & Glory Weekend from August 20 through 23, where double loot and reputation will be on offer alongside Renown boosts.
