Touch screen manufacturers have been working on making smartphone screens more and more thin in the past few years, with many of them concentrating on entirely eliminating bezels altogether. Sharp demonstrated the feature almost two years ago with a niche handset called the Aquos and the company has now one-upped itself with a screen that actually has rounded corners.
While many smartphones have had rounded corners (indeed, Apple claimed it to be a defining feature of its device in its legal case against Samsung), they are only made in the frame of the device. The actual screen is still a rectangle. In other cases, devices like MacBooks used software tricks by turning parts of the screen off to simulate rounded corners but Sharp has, using its Free-Form Display technology, created a touch screen that is actually rounded. The technology allows the company to cut screens in any shape they want, including those gorgeous curves.
Of course, as the Aquos" successor, the phone also features no bezels on either side and the top of the phone whatsoever. It does, unfortunately, have bezels at the bottom, unlike Samsung"s rumoured plans for the S8, which will see the home button removed for a truly bezel-less smartphone.
As it stands, the device, dubbed the Corner R, is still only a proof of concept and not yet ready to make it to the market en masse. Hopefully, we"ll see these gorgeous displays sooner rather than later.
