Sharp debuts new handset with 120Hz refresh rate display

This year, the bezel-less display trend has certainly caught on. But Sharp has been offering these types of handsets for quite some time, even as early as 2014 with the Aquos Crystal. While it does have some stellar handsets in its lineup, most of them remain exclusive to Asia. So it comes as no surprise that the firm is announcing yet another handset that won"t make it stateside, the Aquos R Compact.

What makes the Aquos R Compact a bit more interesting despite its mid-range specifications, is its design. The handset offers quite a chunky look, but the display has a unique cut out on the top portion that accommodates the phone"s front-facing camera and also has an impressive 120hz refresh rate. If the design looks slightly familiar, you"re probably thinking about the Essential PH-1 that also features a distinctive so-called "window"s peak" at the top of the display. .

As for specifications, the phone offers:

  • 4.9-inch 1080p display with a 120hz refresh rate
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor
  • 3GB RAM
  • 16.4MP rear camera with 8MP front-facing camera
  • 32GB internal storage with microSD expansion
  • 2,500mAh battery
  • USB Type-C
  • Android 8.0 Oreo

While it is pictured in white above, the handset will also be available in three other colors: black, silver, and gold. Unfortunately, pricing was not made available, but the handset will be out sometime in December via Softbank.
