The inclusion of Quad HD displays on smartphones has often proved to be a contentious issue, particularly by observers commenting that it"s an unnecessary addition that does little more than drain battery life more quickly.
But that hasn"t stopped some manufacturers from launching Quad HD (2560x1440px) displays on their flagship devices, and even higher-resolution screens are in the works.
As tech.feng.com reports, Sharp - the world"s second largest maker of LCD panels - is now developing 4K smartphone displays, and is preparing to begin selling them to other handset manufacturers for inclusion in devices from 2016. Sharp is reportedly responding to high demand from Chinese OEMs keen to launch higher-end devices.
It"s believed that Sharp will focus on 16:9 panels for handsets, with a resolution of 4096x2160px, and that the first displays will be sized between 5- and 6-inches.
Earlier this year, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu dismissed Quad HD displays on phones as "a stupid thing". He said: "Your eyes totally cannot identify between Full HD and 2K on a smartphone. You can"t distinguish the difference, so it"s totally nonsense."
One can only imagine what Yu will say when he reads about 4K displays on phones.
