It"s been almost one year since Apple acquired song-recognizing mobile app Shazam. Between then and now, Shazam partnered up with Facebook-owned Instagram, allowing users to share songs on Instagram Stories. Now, Apple has decided to incorporate data from Shazam in its music streaming service, Apple Music, with the announcement of a brand new chart for the platform.
It is called the Shazam Discovery Top 50 chart and will be updated weekly to include the week’s trending artists - based on "Shazams from around the world" as described on Apple Music.
In its report, Variety obtained the following statement from Apple explaining the company"s decision to utilize resources from Shazam for its music streaming platform:
“Shazam’s proprietary algorithms [to offer] a unique predictive view on rising artists and reacting tracks to Apple Music subscribers. The ranked songs are all at different points in their individual lifecycle and the majority of artists represented are emerging and up-and-coming. All are experiencing a level of momentum indicative of future potential of hitting the top of Shazam’s Charts, and show any or all of the following patterns: moving quickly through Shazam’s charts, growing rapidly, steadily and/or geographically.”
The weekly ranking powered by Shazam will highlight the top 50 songs created by emerging artists from the U.S. and over 10 more countries.
