Shortage of ATI products begins to bite

RESELLERS AND DISTRIBUTORS say that there"s a chronic shortage of some ATI technology as the firm waits for its chip manufacturer to step up the volumes. ATI appears to be the victim of its own success, but also may well have compounded the problem by underanticipating demand.

Nvidia"s tardy and ill-fated introduction of the GeForce FX essentially gave ATI a whole year to coast along on the wings of superior technology. It was almost exactly a year ago that the INQUIRER reported on its future technology. Because there"s been a big demand for the ATI products from PC makers and systems integrators, supplies are really beginning to be tight. Telephone conversations are apparently regularly punctuating ATI sales peoples" days, while the volume of the phone calls are practically puncturing their ear drums.
