Skype app coming to PS Vita console today

The Skype team at Microsoft has been busy for the past few days. On Sunday, it announced the availability of the first public non-beta version of the Skype app for Windows Phone users. Today, the official Playstation blog announced that a Skype app will be made available for download later today for Sony"s new PS Vita portable game console. The app will be made available to download in other parts of the world on Wednesday.

The free app will work with both the WiFi and WiFi/3G versions of the PS Vita. It will allow users of the console to have free Skype-to-Skype voice calling along with video chats. The Skype app can also turn the PS Vita into a regular phone .. well, kind of; by adding some paid Skype Credit, the app can be used to call any mobile or landline phone.

If you are playing a game or using another application on the PS Vita, the Skype app will alert you if you receive a call. You can then pause a game to take the call and then return back to your game when you are done. More information about the PS Vita Skype app is now available on the Skype web site. You can also check out a video tutorial, shown above, hosted by well known professional gamer Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel.

This is a rare crossover between Microsoft, the new owners of Skype, and its biggest game console rival Sony.
