Skype, the well-known VoIP service slowly making its way onto every mobile device, has been confirmed to soon offer a Windows Phone 7 app. Confirmed at the MIX11 conference, the announcement was made by Microsoft"s VP of Windows Phone Program Management Joe Belfiore earlier today.
While details are scarce, the question on everyone"s lips is whether or not users can expect video calling support. Considering the lack of front-facing camera on current Windows Phone 7 devices, Skype would currently be restricted to a one-way video chat. Although the feature is not particularly useful, it could make for a welcome stop gap until Microsoft delivers support for front-facing cameras.
Video calling on Skype has already made its way to iOS and Android devices, albeit in the form of a leaked app for the HTC Thunderbolt on Android. Skype are keen to move forward into the mobile video calling arena, and while not all current Windows phones have a camera, Nokia"s announced support for the platform is likely to bring a slew of front-camera touting phones onto the scene.
Skype for Windows Phone 7 will be available to download this autumn.
