Microsoft pledged to continue to support Skype for all of its platforms even after its acquisition of the company went official in October. Today, the Skype division announced that the Android port of the software has been updated to the 2.6 version. For non-Skype users, the new version can be downloaded from the Android Marketplace.
The biggest new feature in the Android 2.6 version is the ability for Skype members to send videos and photos over to other Skype users. The service works on both WiFi and 3G/4G connections. If you happen to have an Android smartphone that has NVIDIA"s Tegra 2 processor, the new Skype version gives those owners some improvements in battery life as well as video quality.
More Android devices can now use Skype for video calling, including the Motorola Droid RAZR and the HTC Amaze 4G. The Skype blog says that nearly every Android smartphone that has Android 2.2 or above should be able to run video calls via Skype.
The Android Marketplace listing for Skype has some more info on what"s new with 2.6 including some voicemail improvements.
