Popular VoIP service Skype announced today that a new update to their iPhone application now supports many of the key iOS 4 features, including multi-tasking.
Just last week, the Skype application mysteriously vanished from the app store, and no one knew why. But today, building on the biggest update for the application which was released in May of this year, a new minor 2.0.1 upgrade was launched, which now allows users to make calls and receive instant messages in the background, instead of requiring the Skype application to remain open at all times.
The updated application also supports the iPhone 4"s retina display, which requires higher resolution graphics for its ground-breaking new screen, and voice quality has also been slightly improved.
Skype also announced today that despite earlier plans to charge users for calls made over a 3G connection, they are no longer pursuing that path, and will instead keep Skype calls free for the foreseeable future, citing the fact that "some operators [are] starting to move to tiered pricing models."
The update is now available free of charge in the iTunes app store, although some early adopters, including some owners of the 3GS iPhone, are reporting that the application isn"t working on their device. However, there"s been no official word from Skype yet about any problems.
