Skype gets Android update; tablet support improved

Microsoft"s Skype division continues to be busy behind the scenes, launching new apps for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 in recent weeks. Today, the company launched a new update to its Android app, bringing it up to version 3.0.

This new Skype for Android, now available to download on Google Play, focuses on its use on tablets. As the video above shows, the UI has received a refresh, with the menus now optimized to work better with a larger screen such as Google"s own Nexus 7.

In addition, this new Android version now allows users to sign in with their Microsoft account, which will become more handy as Skype is set to take the place of Microsoft Live Messenger in early 2013. There"s also been some audio improvements made in the new version along with, naturally, unnamed bug fixes.

One thing that this new Skype for Android can"t do is be used in Portrait mode on tablets. Many people who have downloaded the new Android app have complained on the Google Play site that they don"t like that the app only works when a tablet is moved in Landscape mode. Hopefully, Skype and Microsoft will address this in a later version.
