Skype makes calls free to affected regions of Mexico after deadly earthquake

At shortly after 1 p.m. local time, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Mexico, causing dozens of buildings to collapse in Mexico City and the surrounding area. At the time of writing, there are 223 confirmed fatalities, per officials.

In light of this, Microsoft has announced that all domestic and international calls made via Skype to landlines or mobiles in the affected regions will be free of charge until further notice, effective immediately.

The complete list of area codes to which the calls will be free are listed below:

Morelos: 734, 751, 731, 735, 739, 737, 769, and 777

Oaxaca: 995, 994, 972, 971, 958, 954, 953, 951, 924, 757, 287, 283, 281, 274, and 236

Estado de Mexico: 718, 716, 725, 724, 726, 597, 599, 712, 717, 722, 761, 714, 595, 723, 593, 588, 711, 729, 721, 728, 596, 591, 592, 427, 767, 719, 594, and 713

Chiapas: 918, 919, 962, 966, 961, 964, 994, 916, 967, 963, 968, 965, 932, 992, 934, and 917

Puebla: 953, 797, 776, 764, 746, 282, 276, 275, 249, 248, 245, 244, 243, 238, 237, 236, 233, 232, 231, 227, 224, 223, and 222

It should be noted, however, that internet usage charges may still apply. Also keep in mind that Skype cannot be used for emergency calls.
