Smithsonian names video-PC games to be part of 2012 exhibit

An upcoming exhibit devoted to video and PC games at one of the Smithsonian museums in Washington DC has now named the games that will be showcased at the show. The Smithsonian American Art Museum released the list of games that will be shown and honored in 2012 during its exhibit The Art of Video Games.

The games were voted on by the public from a selection of 240 titles earlier this year. The final list of 80 games will be a part of the Smithsonian show that will run from March 16-September 30, 2012. The selection covers the 40 year history of video and PC games. The beginnings of the game industry will be showcased with games like Pac-Man, Pitfall, Space Invaders, and more. Moving up in the years shows that classic titles like Donkey Kong and others will also be shown in the exhibit.

The 8-bit section of the exhibit will have titles like Sid Meier"s Pirates, The Bard"s Tale III and The Legend of Zelda among many others. The third era will showcase the console wars of the 1990s with games like Earthworm Jim for the Sega Genesis, Star Fox for the Super Nintendo system and others. The fourth era in the exhibit gives some nods to PC games like Doom II, Fallout, StarCraft and Diablo II. The Nintendo 64 will have games like Super Mario 64 in the exhibit, the Sega Saturn"s Panzer Dragoon Saga and the Sony Playstation with Final Fantasy VII.

The final era takes a look back at the last 10 years or so with games like Halo, Metal Gear Solid 2 and more titles. PC games are represented by titles such as Portal and even the indie sandbox game Minecraft.
