A new post on Reddit has collated a few users" reports from South Korea about the latest Apple Watch SE overheating and causing impressions on users’ hands. The post lists six cases where the device – all 40mm variants of both the GPS and LTE models – overheats during or after charging.
Most users report that the watch became too hot after being charged and worn on the wrist. Some images of users’ wrist show off marks left by the watch, on the skin. In other cases, the device itself exhibits a bright, burnt spot on the display, suggesting that the heat is intensive enough to have caused a mark on the display from the bottom. The position of the burn is similar in all the images.
It is not clear how widespread the issue is. Some responses on Reddit suggest that users have experienced other problems with Apple’s latest offering in North America that has resulted in them claiming replacement devices. It is also not known if the problems have to do with the battery. Since there are no teardowns of the smartwatch on the web, it is difficult to guess how similar the Watch SE is in design internally to the previous generations, and if any re-used parts are to blame.
It will be interesting to see if more reports emerge in the coming days and if the Cupertino giant provides a statement about these reports. While it could just be a batch of faulty devices, the risks posed by these issues warrant some form of response from Apple.
