Reports are emerging from multiple sources that select pre-orders for Microsoft’s Surface Book via the Microsoft Store are being canceled. A number of users on the Surface subreddit are stating that Microsoft has canceled their orders for the upcoming notebook, in response to payment refusals from banks. Many credit card services are restricting payments to Microsoft, due to acts which signal a “potential fraud alert”.
Windows Central has also received tips from readers, explaining the course of events that lead to the cancelation. Reportedly, users are given multiple chances to correct or update their payment methods, however if after a certain number of attempts the problem is not resolved, the order is cancelled. Currently, Microsoft states the only way to order a Surface Book past this point is via a new order, with a delayed ship date in late November.
While the cancelation of these products may sound like a reasonable response, a large majority of buyers are disappointed in the way the situation is currently being handled. Microsoft opened pre-orders for the Surface Book on October 7. With overwhelming response, a mere week later, pre-orders were closed due to the lack of available stock. Pre-orders have since reopened, but with a shipment delay of up to eight weeks. With the product seeing such high popularity, it is possible Microsoft may honor those who have lost their spot in the queue.
Update: A Microsoft Store spokesperson has given the following statement, reassuring those affected that the situation will be rectified.
As we are processing and shipping the previously placed Surface Book pre-orders, some needed to have order details re-entered to properly process the transaction. We will be contacting impacted customers, and should they wish to keep their order, it will be shipped within a few days of being re-entered
As more details arise on the matter, we will continue to update this story.
