Sonic and all of his friends are getting ready to start racing again. Sega announced today its plans for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, its upcoming follow-up to its Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing that was released in 2010.
The big new feature in this game is that the vehicles that the various characters will be racing can transform. No, not into big giant robots from from cars to boats to planes. The transformations are linked to the tracks and environments in the game. For example, the Temple Trouble track (inspired by Super Monkey Ball) turns your car into a boat when the track falls out from beneath your vehicle and turns into water.
A number of well known Sega characters, including Sonic, will be featured in the new game. That includes Gilius Thunderhead of Golden Axe and Vyse of Skies of Arcadia. The game also promises to give racers a way to block or evade any weapons fired by other racers if they have gained the appropriate skills. Naturally, there will be online multiplayer modes.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is due out for the Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita, Nintendo 3DS, and PC in late 2012. Oddly, there is no word if the game will also be released for the Nintendo Wii or the upcoming Wii U.
