Multinational video game and entertainment giant Sony has acquired the Evolution Championship Series together with RTS, an esports company owned by Endeavor. The takeover comes a few months before the esports tournament is scheduled to take place.
Going forward, the Evolution Championship Series - or Evo for short - will be run by the two new owners jointly.
Tony Cannon, the co-founder of Evo, commented on the acquisition:
“Tom and I are incredibly excited by the partnership with SIE and RTS. Both companies bring a wealth of experience and share our passion for what makes the fighting game community so great. We are looking forward to working with them to launch Evo to the next level while remaining true to our roots.”
Due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, last year"s Evo was unfortunately cancelled and replaced with an online event in its stead. Although things are getting better now, Evo 2021 is still going to be a completely online tournament.
The benefit of being virtual is that the competition will be open to a wider range of players from around the globe as participants won"t need to travel to Las Vegas. Another plus point about this year"s Evo is that entrance will be entirely free of charge, making the championship even further accessible.
Evo 2021 is scheduled to occur over the course of two weekends this August. The first weekend will be on August 6 to 8 and the second on August 13 to 15. Fighting video games are the essence of the annual gaming event. This year"s titles are Tekken 7, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate and Guilty Gear -Strive-. It is worth noting that not all games will be available in all regions.
