Sony announces the mid-range Xperia E5

For the last few months, Sony has put its weight behind the newly announced Xperia X series of smartphones, which recently made its way to India. The company hadn"t announced any new devices belonging to its older lineup until today"s announcement of the Xperia E5, which is its newest mid-range smartphone priced at 199.

The Xperia E5 features a very modest set of hardware specifications, which might seem low compared to some of the recent devices in the range, such as the Moto G4 and G4 Plus. However, Sony has managed to pack most of the features that have become standard in the price range. The device follows the new Xperia X design language and looks rather pleasing in the press images.

The Android Marshmallow-powered E5 comes with the following hardware specifications:

  • 5-inch LCD with 1280x720 (720p) resolution
  • MediaTek Quad-Core MTK6735 CPU
  • 1.5 GB RAM
  • 16 GB internal storage, expandable up to 200 GB with a microSD card
  • 13-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, HDR and LED flash
  • 5-megapixel front camera
  • 2700 mAh battery
  • 4G LTE (Region dependent), Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, NFC

Sony will be launching the E5 in select European, Latin American and Middle East & African markets towards the end of June. There"s no word on a North American launch of the device. According to information received by Xperia Blog from Sony Netherlands, the device will be priced at €199.
