Sony has confirmed that they are working on bringing PS2 backwards compatibility to the PS4 via an email to WIRED late on Thursday evening. “We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation,” a Sony representative told WIRED via email. “We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”
Sony is now the only major console maker that doesn"t currently offer backward compatibility for its older generation of consoles, and the rumors for it possibly happening (for both PS1 and 2 emulation) stretch back almost two years.
This time around, news of a Sony PS2 emulator actually happening surfaced by way of the newly released Star Wars PS4 bundle, specifically via the included classic games bundle. Like most bundled software, the games are available through digital download and are not remastered versions of the originals. Digital Foundry went in-depth explaining their sleuthing methods via a YouTube video, what they discovered, and how these findings indicate that these games are indeed running in a PS2 emulator.
It"s rather odd that Sony opted to "out" news of PS2 emulation in such an "under the radar" manner, maybe the company decided it took them much longer than PlayStation fans would have liked, but in any case, it"s a reality, it"s official, and it"s on the way.
