Sony could nearly double its PlayStation 5 production to meet growing demand

Sony will reportedly increase production of the PlayStation 5 almost twice its initial plan as it expects prolonged COVID-19 lockdowns to buoy demand for the gaming console. The company originally intended to produce between five million and six million units, however, its new plan supposedly places that target at 10 million, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The gaming console is expected to launch sometime in October or November of this year. Ahead of that release, Sony is said to have placed more orders for the upcoming console with its suppliers. That said, the company may face challenges in releasing those units on time due to logistics limitations. Bloomberg noted that Sony ships a large number of its consoles through ocean lines from China, where the units are manufactured. However, the company may also resort to air cargo to speed up deliveries.

Sony"s new plan is to build five million units by the end of September and another five million between October and December, according to the report, citing people privy to Sony"s plans. A large portion of the second batch is reportedly meant to be stockpiled for 2021. The company revealed the design of the PlayStation 5 and its Digital Edition along with some accessories last month. It showed off its next-generation console with white and black finish to the DualSense controller, punctuated only with blue accent lighting.
