Sony could reveal new handset utilizing JDI's 18:9 Full Active near bezel-less display

In a couple of months, Sony will be holding an event at IFA in Berlin. The firm is rumored to announce new handsets, but it could be quite different from what we have come to expect from Sony, utilizing technology from one of its partners.

Japan Display Inc (JDI) was established in 2012 and creates displays that are generally found on smaller devices like smartphones. The firm is a joint venture between Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi and over the years has created advanced displays like the one that can be seen above.

As part of the entity, it would only make sense for Sony to tap into a trusted resource and it looks like it might do so for its next handset. According to a source on Weibo, it will utilize the recently announced Full Active display that offers a resolution of 2160 x 1080 and an aspect ratio of 18:9. While not completely bezel-less, the look is quite impressive, offering minimal borders along the edges on most of its sides.

While it is tough to say what exactly will be announced at IFA, it would be impressive to see another 18:9 handset on the market to compete with Samsung"s Galaxy S8 and LG"s G6. Although both of the aforementioned handsets look stellar, Sharp"s latest entries, which are scheduled to be announced in July, could also top them all. Per usual, we will have to wait until August when Sony will hold its event and unveil its latest products to the world.
