Talking exclusively to Eurogamer, SCEE boss David Reeves has insisted that Sony are not ready to drop the price of the dwindling PS3.
Despite the deepening recession, Sony is insistent that the Playstation 3 will remain the most expensive system on the market and that this is all part of the consoles ten year life cycle.
"I"m not saying there are going to be any price cuts at all in the short term or the medium term. I"m not saying we don"t need to do it - we are expensive. It is possible that as the cost comes down, we will be able to do it."
Third quarter figures released on Thursday showed PS3 sales were down on the previous year, with 4.46 million units sold. Despite a sales decrease of 44,000 units compared to 2007, Reeves shrugged off suggestions that sales had peaked.
"Absolutely not. We"re two-and-a-half years into a ten year cycle. For October, November and December we were in a holding pattern, especially with the pricing. We had to demonstrate we could make a profit with the business model, and that"s what we"ve done."
Analysts are forecasting a reduction in April, with as much as $100 being slashed from the price tag. With the release of
