Sony had originally planned to ship 2 million units between North America and Japan by the end of calendar 2006. The company was able to meet its 1 million-unit North American goal by year-end.
Sony said in a statement that the PS3 is the fastest PlayStation platform to reach 2 million shipped worldwide. The console launched in Japan and North America in November, and is set to launch in Europe this March. Five million PS3 software units have shipped worldwide as of December 2006, with titles including Resistance: Fall of Man from developer Insomniac Games leading the way.
Sony also released statistics related to its PlayStation network. The company said that a total of 500,000 users have gone online with the PS3 in Japan and North America and the free Gran Turismo HD Concept hit 300,000 downloads worldwide in about 20 days since its debut.
According to Sony, the PS2 and PSP platforms have respectively shipped 110 million and 20 million units worldwide to date.
