When it comes to Sony"s flagship line-up, one word has consistently described its design language in recent years, and that is "bezel". After Samsung started pushing the envelope when it comes to how small it could possibly make the bezel on the flagship Galaxy-range, the Japanese electronics giant continued to trail far behind, with its most recent XZ Premium flagship launching with a screen-to-body ratio of roughly 68 percent.
During an interview with The Indian Express, Sony India"s Managing Director, Kenichiro Hibi, noted that the aforementioned "Omnibalance" design language could be on its way out when the next line-up of flagship smartphones rolls around:
“We have deployed an omnibalance design as long as the X series continues to be available in the market. Also, we are planning to launch new generation of products and you can expect a complete new design from the devices”
Although he did not explicitly mention that the new design would definitely aim towards being bezel-less, Hibi did acknowledge that the market has moved towards higher screen-to-body ratios, which could suggest that Sony might move in that direction as well. Apple has recently unveiled its answer to the new frontier of bezel-less smartphones named the iPhone X, which sports a "notch" at the top where the camera and facial recognition hardware resides, much like the Essential Ph-1 with Samsung, on the other hand, opting for an arguably more elegant solution with the Galaxy Note8.
Sony launched the XZ Premium in June and it features a 5.46-inch 4K display with full IP68 water-and-dust resistance rating. Netflix announced that it would support the device for 4K HDR streaming on its service, alongside several other flagship devices earlier this month.
