It was only a matter of time before "Hollywood" would find it necessary to create a movie based on Emoji"s. Sony Pictures Animation has purchased a movie pitch and will start working to release a flick in the near future.
Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures Animation was able to outbid a few other studios in a deal that neared seven figures. While plot details of the film are nonexistent, the animated project will be written by Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis. Leondis will also be directing and has worked on previous animated titles like Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters and others.
While this move isn"t surprising, it will be interesting to see whether something as universal and globally established like an Emoji will transfer into a movie blockbuster. Although globally recognized, these aren"t standard characters with a storied past, but simple emoticons that are used while we communicate via text.
