Google released its latest monthly security updates for Android last week, and BlackBerry was among the first to bring those patches to its devices. Not too far behind is Sony, which has now begun distributing the new update to some of its higher-end handsets too.
Sony is currently rolling out the March security update to four devices. The Xperia X and X Compact both get new software with software build number 39.2.A.0.333, while the Xperia X Performance and XZ get build 39.2.A.0.442.
It"s not yet clear when Sony plans to bring the update to the rest of its devices - and this remains an ongoing problem for the broader Android ecosystem. While Google is providing regular security patches for Android devices, some of its hardware partners are taking up to two months to bring those updates to their handsets. The typical lack of urgency shown by carriers in approving updates is also leaving devices exposed to vulnerabilities for weeks at a time.
Still, it"s encouraging to see Sony start rolling out the patches relatively quickly after they were made available - and owners of the other devices in its range will no doubt be hoping that they don"t have to wait too much longer before they receive those security updates too.
