Google announced Android 9.0 Pie earlier this month and began rolling it out to Pixel devices soon after. OEMs such as HTC and Motorola have revealed their plans to bring the latest version of Android to some of their top devices, and now Sony has also shared details about the smartphones which would be receiving the update.
Sony has been known to deliver latest Android updates to a large number of smartphones, but has always struggled to keep up with the release timelines. This time around the company has reduced the number of supported devices and has shared a timeline on when the update would hit them.
The devices that will receive Android Pie as part of the first rollout starting September are as follows:
- Sony Xperia XZ Premium
- Sony Xperia XZ1
- Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact
- Sony Xperia XZ2
- Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact
- Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium
Sony has chosen to leave out the Snapdragon 820-powered Xperia XZ that was launched almost two years ago from the update rollout.
The mid-range devices from the manufacturer that will also be receiving Android Pie, but in early 2019 are as follows:
- Sony Xperia XA2
- Sony Xperia XA2 Plus
- Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra
It would be interesting to see whether the company plans to launch any new smartphones powered by the latest version of Android at IFA in September.
