Sony tells customers only Xperia Z-series will get Lollipop - but there may be hope for others

When it comes to updating its smartphone range, Sony has a pretty poor track record. Back in September, for example, the company confirmed that four of its handsets - which, at that time, were between 13 and 17 months old - would get no further updates.

With the rollout of Android 5.0 Lollipop continuing around the world, many Sony customers have been wondering when they might expect to receive the update on their handsets. But last week, the company did it again, revealing that many of its devices will never get the Lollipop update.

In a series of tweets to customers enquiring about the update for devices like the Xperia M2, Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia E1, Sony responded consistently over the course of several days. While each tweet was worded slightly differently, the message was always the same: "The Android 5.0 Lollipop update is only going to be available for the Xperia Z series, we do apologise."

@VIVSNO Hi. We can advise that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is going to be released for the entire Xperia Z series only, we do apologise.

However, as PocketNow reports, Sony has since adjusted its stance. Rather than parroting the same line about Lollipop only being available for the Xperia Z-series, the firm is now responding with a less definitive statement:

@avisekpaul1 We can’t comment on upgrades for further products at this time – please stay tuned to our blog for the latest information.

And adding fuel to the fire of speculation that the company may yet release Android 5.0 for devices outside of its Xperia Z-series, IT168.com uncovered what it claims are screenshots of Lollipop running on the Xperia C3.

Assuming that these screenshots are actually genuine, their existence is still no guarantee that Sony will actually make the update available for that device, or any other beyond its Z-series handsets.

The company"s unequivocal position regarding Android for the Z range last week is clearly at odds with its softer stance this week - but given the company"s dreadful history of updating its devices, it"s probably best that you don"t hold your breath.
