Sony to Combine the Two PS2 Processors in One Chip

Sony Computer Entertaiment President Ken Kutaragi hinted at an upcoming PlayStation 2 processor redesign in a recent Nikkei Microdevice article. By using a new 0.13-Micron chip manufacturing process both the Emotion Engine and the Graphics Processor can be contained on a single microchip.

Sony"s plant in Nagasaki, Japan will create the new chips, and this development is expected to nearly triple the possible yearly output of PS2 hardware. Neither information about how this change will affect pricing nor expected times of implementation for this procedure was announced.
