Sony is getting back into the Google TV business. In a press release today, the company announced that the previously announced NSZ-GS7 Internet Player set-top box, with Google TV installed, will go on sale on July 22nd in the US. Pre-orders are being taken today for the price of $199.
The Sony Internet Player will also be the first Google TV-based hardware product that will be sold outside the US. It will first be sold in the UK in July, followed by other countries such as Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Brazil, and Mexico.
Sony has also announced a delay in the release of the Google TV-equipped NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray Disc player. Originally set for release this summer, it will now go on sale sometime this fall for $299.
The Sony Internet Player with Google TV is the first all-new set-top box with Google"s television operating system that has been released since Google TV launched in the fall of 2010. Back then, Logitech sold a set-top box, the Revue, with Google TV in the fall of 2010. However, the reviews and sales were so bad that Logitech stopped production of the device. At the time, Logitech CEO Guerrino De Luca said that the Revue set-top box was "a mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature."
LG has also released a series of flat-screen TVs with Google TV support earlier in 2012 and Vizio is also supposed to offer TVs with Google TV support later this year.
