Sony is reportedly cutting around 1000 jobs from its smartphone division, with those in Europe and China being primarily effected.
Reuters reports that these cuts, expected to be announced alongside the company’s next financial results on February 4th, will be on top of an earlier round of lay-offs announced last year.
Sony’s smartphone division has been struggling for a number of quarters now, despite its critical success with the Xperia Z flagships. Last summer the company’s profits saw important reductions and Sony even admitted that it likely won’t be an important player in the smartphone market from now on.
The company has tried to reorganize its businesses by focusing more on core products and it looks like smartphones are simply not making the cut.
It’ll be interesting to see how Sony handles this and whether the upcoming Sony Xperia Z4, expected to be a monster of a device, will be enough to reverse the company’s fortunes. Though, in all likelihood, it looks like Sony has already given up.
