Remember the 1990s? Remember when virtual reality was promoted in that decade to be the next big thing in gaming with all of us wearing goggles and becoming immersed in the game world? Well that never really came to pass for a variety of reasons; the goggles were too bulky, the hardware needed to run the games wasn"t up to the tasks and so on. Virtual reality has pretty much been in the technology spare closet for over a decade but now Sony says it"s working on its revival.
Develop reports that Sony first showed off a prototype of a head mounted device at CES that has two OLED screens inside. Since CES, the article says that Sony has been working in its R&D department to put in head tracking features into the prototype device. According to Mick Hocking, the senior director at Sony Worldwide Studios, "I have to say, what we’ve done in the R&D projects has just been fantastic. We’re working with a couple of games at Sony that are experimenting with virtual reality type experiences."
But could this device truly launch a revival of the virtual reality gaming fad? Hocking states, "Yeah it could be, it certainly seems possible, and these head-mounted displays incorporate 3D tech. It’s very, very cool. And obviously it’s a fantastic way to experience 3D because both images are being directly fed into each eye." In a longer chat with Hocking, he talks about Sony"s efforts to expand 3D gaming on the Playstation 3 console.
