Sony"s launch of the Android-powered Xperia Play was supposed to be a revolution in terms of playing high end games on a mobile phone. It contains a slide out gamepad along with a list of exclusive games. It was the first smartphone that supported the mobile version of Minecraft. However, none of that was apparently enough to spur large sales of the smartphone. Now there"s a new rumor that the Xperia Play may be getting a second chance with a new version.
Android Central reports that it has received a leaked memo from Verizon claiming that this week there is some internal testing going on at their company for a new version of the smartphone that includes support for Verizon"s 4G LTE network. There"s no word on when this new version of the phone will be released (heck, we can"t even get Verizon to admitĀ to a release date for the Galaxy Nexus, much less a LTE Xperia Play).
If such a version is indeed in its testing phase that means the phone should be released in the very near future. We do know that the Xperia Play, and indeed all of the phones in Sony"s Xperia line up, will be getting a software upgrade to Android 4.0 at some point.
