Sony is developing "new concept Android software" which could have an impact on design of the company"s future mobile products. Sony is also offering users the chance to test out the new software - but you"ll have to meet some very specific criteria to qualify for the program.
The company says that its "Android concept" is "a new initiative for Sony users that have a passion for innovation and the latest technology." Those who are selected to join the program will "receive a concept Sony Android software version, with a fresh take on the Sony user experience".
According to The Verge, Sony has said that it plans to develop the new concept software "from the ground up", focusing only on Sony"s core apps - Camera, Music, etc - and Google"s communications software; but no Google Play Services, and no bloatware. A Sony spokesperson said: "The idea is that we evaluate and iteratively adapt the experience based on user input."
The software itself is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop, and a new build will be pushed out to testers every week. But Sony is limiting availability of the Android concept software to a "select group" - you"ll have to be in Sweden to be able to apply, and you"ll also have to supply your own Xperia Z3.
If you meet these criteria, you can sign up for the program here. The evaluation period will begin on July 27, and continue until September 13. Sony says that you"ll "be able to restore to your current Xperia software" at the end of the trial period, but your personal data and settings will be lost. You"ll also need a Windows PC from which to install the software to your handset, but be aware that the Xperia Z3 Compact is not supported.
