In what is seen as a step forward for the new Edge rendering engine, Microsoft has revealed it was included in the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones, which was released earlier this week
Program Manager for Internet Explorer, Kyle Pflug, said in a blog post that they are "excited to bring this new rendering engine to phones for the first time with the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones." The new rendering engine is hosted within Internet Explorer in this build, however, a new browser, known as "Project Spartan", will replace Internet Explorer in future previews.
As a fork of Trident, the current rendering? engine found in Internet Explorer, Edge is Microsoft"s way to break free from the legacy support that constantly slows down IE. Edge is also the core of Spartan, the new browser coming with Windows 10.
Microsoft"s goal for Spartan is to be the browser for all versions of Windows 10, so it comes as no surprise that Spartan on phones will bring the same interoperability improvements, new features, increased performance, and improved standards support that will be found on the desktop version.
Pflug also said there will be an even tighter coordination of new web platform update availability on desktops and phones, which means implementation of new web standards will come faster to both.
The next Windows 10 for phones preview build is expected some time next month but there"s no word on whether Spartan will come then or whether users might have to wait longer.
