Spotify launches Premium Duo, a plan for couples

Spotify already offers a Premium plan for both lone users and families, and considering the family plan already costs less than two individual plans, you might think that"s enough. But the music streaming service seems to disagree, and today it announced Premium Duo, a plan meant for couples to enjoy music both together and alone, after it trialed the plan last year.

Serving as a sort of mid-step between the individual and family plans, Premium Duo supports two accounts with the Premium features you"d expect, such as ad-free music listening, offline play, and on-demand playback. In terms of unique features, there"s Duo Mix, a playlist designed to be enjoyed by the two members of the plan together, which gets updated over time to add more music both members of the couple enjoy. This is pretty much the same as the Family Mix in the Family plan, but it"s just meant for two people.

In terms of price, the Premium Duo plan does offer some benefit, especially if you"re already using Premium Family with just two users. It costs $12.99 per month (or the equivalent in other markets), which is $2 less than the Premium Family plan, and just $3 more than the individual Premium plan.

Spotify says it ran a study with its users and found that 73% of couples listen to music together as a way of remembering memories, while 63% do it to "build their identity and create memorable moments". Based on that data, it seems plausible that there"s a market for a plan for couples, though it remains to be seen just how well it will do. If you"re already using Spotify Premium, you can change plans in your account settings. otherwise, you can learn more about Premium Duo here.
