Spotify unveiled today a stripped-down version of its music streaming app, but with the same listening experience and controls that users can access using the main version. Spotify Lite requires only 10MB of storage, and is meant for older Android devices and users with limited data plans.
With Spotify Lite, you can still browse, play, and save songs, among other existing capabilities available through the main app. What"s new, however, is that you can now set your data limit and receive notifications when the cap is reached. It"s also optimized for slow network connections, so you won"t have to worry about interruptions when connectivity in your area is an issue. Additionally, you can control your device storage by clearing your cache with a tap.
Regarding the launch of Spotify Lite, Kalle Persson, Senior Product Manager at Spotify, said:
“Spotify Lite was built from the ground up based on user feedback from around the world, allowing millions more to enjoy the world’s best music experience — especially in areas with limited bandwidth and phone storage."
The app is available both to Spotify"s free and premium users and it can be used either alongside the main app or as a standalone music streaming tool. It works with Android 4.3 Jelly or newer.
Spotify Lite is available to download in 36 countries across Asia, Latin America, Middle East, and Africa via the Google Play Store. The company says it plans on rolling out the app to more markets in the future.
