A year ago, music streaming service Spotify reported that it had increased its subscriber base to 30 million. Last September, the company said that that figure had grown to 40 million in just six months.
Now, Spotify says that it has over 50 million subscribers, an increase of 10 million (25%) in less than half a year.
That means that Spotify is continuing to hold its ground against the increasing threat of rival services, including Apple Music. When Apple launched its music platform in mid-2015, many assumed that it would grow at breakneck speed, and some believed that it would quickly cause serious problems for Spotify, and other services. But at last count, in December, Apple said that it had 20 million subscribers - an increase of three million in three months - indicating a far slower rate of growth than that of Spotify.
Spotify is clearly doing something right, but plenty of challenges still lie ahead for the company, if it"s to continue maintaining that lead against its steadily-improving rivals.
